BOM Update Tool

You can replace a sub-assembly BOM and adjust costs for all parent BOMs through the BOM Update Tool.

When a sub-assembly item's BOM is linked to a parent BOM, you can use this tool to replace the existing BOM. The new BOM will be updated in all of the parent BOMs where it was used by the system. A new BOM must first be made.

1. How to use the BOM Update Tool

Consider a corporation that produces computers. The computer's bill of materials would look something like this:

Selecting the sub-old assembly's and new BOMs

Use the Replace button to update the new BOM in any parent BOMs that have CPU selected as a sub-assembly.

The old BOM of the CPU will be replaced by the new BOM in the BOM of the finished item when you click the Replace button (Computer).

Would the parent BOM's exploding Items be replaced by the BOM Replace Tool?

No, exploded Items which do not have any BOMs of their own cannot be replaced in the parent BOM. Consider the scenario when the Item Monitor lacks a sub-assembly and cannot be updated with this tool. You should either cancel and amend the current BOM or create a new BOM for the final object when modifying exploded items.

Update BOM Cost

You can update the cost of every Bill of Materials based on the most recent purchase price, price list rate, or raw material valuation rate by clicking the button Update latest price in all BOMs. If your new BOM has materials with various Rates, this is helpful.

When this button is pressed, a background operation will be started by the system to update all of the BOM's costs. Background jobs are used to process it because updating all of the BOMs can take a while (depending on how many there are).

Moreover, daily automatic execution of this capability is possible. You must turn on "Update BOM Cost Automatically" in Manufacturing Settings to accomplish that.
